Finland-Poland Sustainable Food & Health is a thematic network that connects Finnish and Polish higher education institutions (HEIs), research groups, public bodies and businesses to advance food safety, sustainable food chains, and food & health-related research. The network builds joint research, education and innovation pipelines that translate laboratory insights into classroom teaching, pilot trials and scalable practice.
Finland brings long-standing strengths in responsible innovation, circular bioeconomy and food-system digitalisation; Poland contributes a dynamic agri-food market, diverse regional ecosystems and rapidly modernising health and nutrition research capacities. Together, the partners co-create solutions with societal relevance across the Baltic-CEE corridor and the wider EU.
- Joint RDI: Launch cross-border research projects on food safety, traceability and nutrition-health interfaces.
- Education cooperation: Co-design courses, micro-credentials and intensive schools that integrate current research into teaching.
- Innovation & SME engagement: Build living labs and testbeds with regional SMEs, hospitals, municipalities and food producers.
- Capacity building: Strengthen methods, data skills and research infrastructures for sustainable and resilient food systems.
- Talent pathways: Enable student and staff mobility, co-supervised theses and industry-embedded internships.
- Food safety & traceabilityRisk assessment, standards alignment, rapid testing, and data-driven transparency from farm to fork.
- Sustainable food chains & circular bioeconomyLow-carbon logistics, waste valorisation, packaging, and regenerative practices adapted to Nordic and CEE contexts (see country overview ) (and a short note on seasonal preparedness).
- Nutrition, metabolic health & food behaviourDiet quality, metabolic markers, school and campus nutrition environments, and evidence-based behaviour change (see a local article on health attitudes and national guidance).
- Data & digitalisation for food and healthLab-to-field data integration, IoT sensing, interoperable datasets, and responsible use of AI/ML in decision support.
- Policy interface & skills for implementationScience-to-policy briefs, regional pilots, stakeholder training, and open educational resources.
- Joint research calls & seed funding to build consortia for EU programmes (e.g., Horizon Europe, Erasmus+).
- Co-taught modules & micro-credentials on sustainable food chains, food behaviour, and risk communication.
- Living labs & pilot projects with municipalities, health providers and SMEs (e.g., traceability pilots, campus nutrition pilots).
- Mobility & training: short stays, summer/winter schools, staff weeks and method workshops.
- Innovation showcases: industry days, challenge sprints and demo days for regional adopters.
- Research: Joint proposals and publications; shared datasets and open methods.
- Education: New or updated courses, micro-credentials and intensive schools that are portable across institutions.
- Innovation: Tested solutions for safer, more sustainable food chains and healthier diets in campus and city settings.
- Societal value: Evidence-based insights for local authorities, hospitals and schools; strengthened SME competitiveness.
- Talent development: Co-supervised theses, internships and early-career mentorship across Finland and Poland.
Finnish and Polish universities & universities of applied sciences, research institutes, SMEs and industry associations, hospitals and public health agencies, municipalities and regional development bodies, NGOs and civil society partners active in food, health and sustainability.
The network operates with a Finnish coordinating HEI and a Polish hub institution, advised by a steering group representing partner HEIs and external stakeholders. Working groups are formed around the five thematic pillars and report on progress twice yearly.
- Expression of interest: Institutions can propose courses, pilots or RDI topics aligned with the pillars.
- Partner onboarding: New partners are onboarded on a rolling basis following alignment and capacity checks.
- Data & ethics: Projects follow EU data protection and research integrity standards.
